From Ihram to Tawaf: A Step-by-Step Guide to Performing Pilgrimage
Performing Umrah or Hajj is one of the most spiritually rewarding journeys a Muslim can undertake. For many pilgrims, especially first-timers, understanding each step beforehand makes the experience smoother and more meaningful. This guide walks you through the pilgrimage process — from entering Ihram to completing Tawaf — in a simple and practical way.
1. Preparing for the Journey
Before traveling, pilgrims should ensure they are physically, mentally, and spiritually prepared. This includes:
Making sincere intention (Niyyah) for Umrah or Hajj
Seeking forgiveness from others
Learning the rituals in advance
Packing appropriate clothing and essentials
Preparation helps ensure peace of mind throughout the pilgrimage.
2. Entering the State of Ihram
Ihram is the sacred state a pilgrim enters before reaching Makkah.
For Men:
Wear two white unstitched cloths
Avoid perfumes, hair cutting, and stitched clothing
For Women:
After wearing Ihram, make the intention:
“Labbaik Allahumma Umrah” (for Umrah)
or
“Labbaik Allahumma Hajj” (for Hajj)
From this point, pilgrims continuously recite the Talbiyah:
“Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik…”
3. Arriving at Masjid al-Haram
Upon entering the Holy Mosque in Makkah, pilgrims feel a powerful spiritual atmosphere. It is recommended to enter with the right foot first and recite a supplication before seeing the Kaaba.
4. Performing Tawaf
Tawaf is the act of circling the Kaaba seven times in a counterclockwise direction.
Steps of Tawaf:
Start at the Black Stone (Hajr-e-Aswad)
Complete seven full circles
Recite prayers and duas during each round
After Tawaf, perform two rak’ahs of prayer near Maqam Ibrahim (if possible)
Tawaf symbolizes unity, devotion, and submission to Allah.
5. Sa’i Between Safa and Marwah
After Tawaf, pilgrims walk seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah. This act commemorates the struggle of Hazrat Hajar (AS) in search of water for her son Ismail (AS).
6. Cutting or Shaving Hair
To complete Umrah:
This marks the end of Ihram restrictions.
7. Completing the Pilgrimage
With these steps completed, the Umrah is finished. For Hajj, additional rituals follow on specific days, including Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah.
